Two of Pender's Most Prominent Citizens Dead.
Two of the oldest and most prominent citizens of Pender county have recently 
been removed from their field of usefulness and honor by the hand of death.

Mr. W. S. Larkins, aged 93 years, and probably the oldest man in the county, 
died a few days ago, and on Monday last, Mr. Daniel Shaw, another leading 
citizen, died at his residence near Lillington Hall, in the 72d year of his 
age.  Mr. Shaw was a native of Cumberland county, a graduate of the State 
University, and represented New Hanover in the Legislature before the county 
was divided.  He was chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Pender county 
for several terms, and until he declined to serve longer.  His funeral will 
take place at Mount William Church, in Pender county, this afternoon at two 
o'clock.

Death of Mr. Daniel Shaw

Another one of Pender's old and prominent citizens has passed away in the 
death of Mr. Daniel Shaw.  He died on Monday night at 7 o'clock, after an 
illness of nine days, at his residence near Lillington Hall, Pender county.

Mr. Shaw was in the 70th year of his age, and was a graduate of the University 
of North Carolina.  In early youth he settled in that potion of New Hanover 
county, now Pender county.  In the fifties he represented New Hanover in the 
General Assembly of North Carolina, and when Pender county was formed out of 
the upper potion of New Hanover county he was made chairman of the Board of 
County Commissioners of the new county and held that place until he declined 
to serve longer.  He was a man of education and culture and his life was 
marked by an irreproachable character, an earnest Christian's experience being 
his from early youth.  He was married twice, but his last wife preceded him to 
the grave many years ago and he was left a widower with several children, all 
of whom are now grown, two sons having gone West.

The remains will be buried at Mr. Williams Presbyterian church this afternoon 
a 2 o'clock.

Death of Mr. Daniel Shaw

Mr. Daniel Shaw, an old and highly esteemed resident of Pender county, and one 
of the most prominent citizens of this section of the State, died at his 
residence near Lillington Hall last night, aged 71 years.  Mr. Shaw was, we 
think, born in Cumberland county.  He was a graduate of the University of 
North Carolina, and in his early youth settled in Pender county.  He was twice 
married by has been a widower for many years.  He left several children, all 
grown, and two of his sons are in the far West.  Previous to the war he at one 
time represented New Hanover county in the Legislature.  When Pender county 
was formed out of upper part of New Hanover he was chosen chairman of the 
Board of Commissioners, a position he filled most acceptably for several terms 
and until he finally positively declined to serve longer.  He was a highly 
cultured gentleman, of many strong, admirable traits of character, of a keen, 
analytical mind and withal a sterling Christian.  The funeral services will be 
held a Mt. Williams' Church Pender county, at 2 o'clock to-morrow afternoon.
