Kathleen H. Walker 

ROCKY POINT--Kathleen Hewett Walker, 80, a well-known Pender County artist, died Sunday, 
Aug. 24, 2008, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
She was born Nov. 19, 1927 in Wilmington, daughter of the late David O. Hewett and Delphia 
Pruitt Hewett. Walker was a prolific artist and painted a wide scope of subjects. She participated 
in Spring Fest and the Blueberry Festival and was an active member of the Pender Arts Council 
where she sold works and had several shows. A member of the Oil Painting Class at Cape Fear 
Community College for close to twenty years, she was a great help and inspiration to new students 
and substituted for the instructor when needed. The class will miss her wit and laughter very much. 
Walker also donated paintings to raise money for the Arts Council. She gave materials to students 
unable to afford them and even carried a student to class when the lady was unable to drive herself. 
All of her fellow classmates will remember her for the gift of herself to each of them over the years. 
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Elbert H. Walker; a daughter, Patsy Ann Bennett and 
husband Mark, of New Bern; two grandsons, James A. and Roy A. Clements; and two 
great-grandchildren, Christian and Austin Clements.
A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to

Porter Scott

LARGO Fla.--Porter Scott, 85, died Sunday, August 17, 2008 at his residence.
He was born May 27, 1923 in Riley’s Creek Community in Rocky Point, son of the late William 
Porter and Annie L. Merritt Scott. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeannette Morrill Scott, 
on May 3, 2006; and three brothers, Blondy E. Scott, Harold O. Scott and Arcadia Scott.
Scott was a graduate of Long Creek Grady High School and served in the U.S. Navy during 
World War II. He was a carpenter who built homes and made beautiful inlaid wooden boxes. He 
and his wife, Jeannette, lived in Farmington, Mich., until their retirement when they moved to 
Florida, first to Pinellas Park and finally settling in Largo. They like to travel. She loved music and 
loved to sing. Jeannette was also an expert crocheter of beautiful afghans. 
Survivors include a son, Robert Scott of Green River, Wyo.; and a daughter, Ann Marie Scott 
Nichols (Colin) of Enfield, England; three grandchildren, Deana Slone (Edwin) of North Lewisburg, 
Ohio, Luke Nichols and Jake Nichols both of Enfield, England; a great granddaughter, Summer 
Hevelone of Springtown, Texas; a sister, Marie Scott Horton (Grag) of Wilmington; two brothers, 
Thurman E. Scott (Frances) of Durham and David Jack Scott (Barbara) of Wilson; and a sister-in-law, 
Barbara Scott of Washington. Extended family includes a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. 
Jeanette is also survived by a sister, Marion Horton of Cadillac, Mich.
A memorial service will be held for Porter and Jeannette Scott on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 10:30 a.m. at 
Riley’s Creek Baptist Church in Rocky Point with Rev. Melvin Hall officiating.Interment will follow in 
Scott Cemetery on Scott Road.

Clara Joyce Peay

ROCKY POINT--Clara Joyce Peay, age 76, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008 at New Hanover 
Regional Medical Center.
She was born May 5, 1932 in Sampson County, daughter of the late Jake and Arlene Guyton 
Faircloth. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Alton Peay Sr. and brother, Martin 
Faircloth. Peay was a member of Riley’s Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Howard Alton Peay Jr. of Wilmington; two daughters, Connie Odom and 
husband Ricky, of Rocky Point and Sarah Ann Lyon and husband Buster, of Cape Carteret; three
 grandchildren, Bradley Odon and wife Brandi and Jamie Odom and wife Alexis, all of Rocky Point 
and Amanda Bridges Peay; a great granddaughter, Trinitee Odom; and two brothers, Troy Faircloth 
and wife Millie, of Baltimore, Md. and Jackie Faircloth and wife Mary, of Delco.
A private family graveside service was held Sunday, Aug. 31, at Riley’s Creek Memorial Cemetery

Elsie Leviner Brown

BURGAW--Elsie Leviner Brown, age 63, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008.
She was born Sept. 9, 1944 in Wallace, S. C., daughter of the late Heborn and Bessie Hatcher. 
She was preceded in death by three husbands, Neal Leviner, Lee Tunstall and Reese Brown. 
Brown was a faithful member and deacon of Pike Rocky Point Presbyterian Church. She was 
a proud evangelist with a license to preach, who joyfully shared the word of God with others.
She found joy in the simplest things, but her greatest joy was family. Brown loved music, singing, 
knitting and crocheting. She was blessed with a love for the Lord and a faith that took her through 
an extended illness. Survivors include her loving family: two daughters, Loretta Williams and 
husband Steven and Samantha Tunstall all of Burgaw; two grandsons, Steven Williams and 
Christopher Savory; and many nieces and nephews.
Final rites were held Saturday, Aug. 30, at Pike Rocky Point Presbyterian Church with Rev. J. C. 
Young-Thompson officiating. Burial followed in Pike Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Casketbearers 
were Damon Stanley, Richard Bellows, Mark Mintz, Matt Todd, Kenny Powers and Jim Martin. 
Honorary bearers were Elders and Deacons of Pike Rocky Point Presbyterian Church.

KINSTON - God welcomed another "angel" into His kingdom when he called Edna Rivenbark 
"home" on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008.?Born in Pender County on September 16, 1920, she was 
the daughter of the late Scornwall Lester Rivenbark and Eva Wells Rivenbark. In addition to 
her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Drexel Kermit "Rex" Smith, Jr.; 
sisters, Luema Rivenbark Higgins and Carolyn Rivenbark Teachey and brothers, Stacey and 
Woodley Rivenbark. Mrs. Rivenbark was a homemaker, a beautician and was associated with 
Herring & Rivenbark, Inc. She will be remembered as a devoted and loving wife, mother, 
grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.? She was a Pink Lady Volunteer 
and a member of Southwood Memorial Christian Church where she served as a Sunday 
School Teacher and a Deaconess. Survivors include her husband of 71 years, Marion Vance 
"M.V." Rivenbark; daughters, Thyra Rivenbark Smith and husband Kermit of Greenville and K
ay Rivenbark Smith and husband Doug of Kinston; grandchildren, Jarma Smith Khoury and 
husband Tony, Michele Smith Neuhoff and husband Jay, Melissa Smith Richter and husband 
Martin, and Renee Smith Carter and husband Brad, all of Greenville; great-grandchildren, Ely, 
Bryn and Gabby Khoury, Blythe, Craig and Reid Neuhoff, Drex and Hagen Richter, Caroline 
and Christine Carter, all of Greenville; sisters, Evelyn Bloodworth of Fayetteville, Maude

FITZHUGH M. PIERCE
Fitzhugh Melvin Pierce, 72, of Goldsboro, died Tuesday, April 1 at Wayne Memorial Hospital 
in Goldsboro.
Born in Pender County, he was the son of Eula Mae Foss Pierce of Leland, N.C., and the
 late Bryant Henry Pierce. He also was preceded in death by two sons, James Pierce and 
Danny Ray Pierce. He attended Love Memorial Baptist Church and was a retired mechanic.
Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with 
the Rev. Richard Toler and the Rev. Ira Williford officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial 
Park.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Eula Mae Pierce; three sons, William 
Pierce of Rocky Point, Elton Pierce and Alton Pierce, both of Leland; two daughters, Teresa 
Ann Harrelson of Fremont, Sandra Mae Ridlehoover of Lexington, S.C.; a brother, W.T. Pierce 
of Odgen; a sister, Eva Mae Shingleton of Hampstead; several grandchildren and several 
great- grandchildren.

Mrs. Daisy Newkirk Bembry, 88, 0f Wilmington, departed this life, Monday, August 18, 2008 
at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Lifecare Center. She was born, June 20, 1920 in Pender 
County to the late John and Lula Bordeaux Newkirk. She attended the public schools of 
Pender County and graduated from Pender County Training School in 1938. She received 
a Bachelor of Science Degree from Shaw University in the field of Home Economics in 1948.
She began her professional career teaching Home Economics in the Chowan County School 
System in Edenton, N.C. and went on to a distinguished career in the Agriculture Extension 
services. After thirty (30) years of dedicated services, she retired and moved to Wilmington, 
N.C. to be near her loving brother, John Clifton Newkirk.
Daisy was reared in a loving Christian family and Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 
Burgaw. After moving to Wilmington, she connected herself with Ebenezer Missionary 
Baptist Church.
She was married to the late Robert Bembry of Edenton, N.C. Preceding her in death were
her sister, Mable Herring (Benny) of Burgaw, her brothers, Kenneth Newkirk (Helen) of Watha 
and John Newkirk of Wilmington.
Daisy leaves to cherish her memory, one brother, Mack Dudley Newkirk of Wallace, NC; one 
sister-in-law Lillie Mae Newkirk of Wilmington, N.C.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and 
friends.
The family will receive friends and relatives Friday, August 22, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 
p.m. at Dunn Funeral Home, Burgaw. The funeral will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday 
August 23, 2008 at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend A. L. Gee officiating.

David Earl Bonham Sr.

ROSE HILL--David Earl Bonham Sr., age 68, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 at the Brian Center 
in Wallace.
Bonham was born July 28, 1940 in Duplin County, son of the late Henry Harlee and Fannie 
Williamson Bonham. 

Survivors include his wife, Alice Horrell Bonham of Rose Hill; a daughter, Sherry B. Brown and 
husband David of Wallace; a son, David Earl Bonham Jr. and wife Robin of Rose Hill; a grandson,
 Benjamin Michael Dover; two step grandchildren, Jessica Crockrell and husband Jason and J. P. 
Brown; a step great grandson, Nathan Crockrell; two brothers, Frank Bonham and wife Glenna of 
Williamsburg, Va. and Bob Bonham and wife Sarah of Wrightsboro; two sisters, Mabel Thigpen of

Darlene Virginia Avery

WILLARD--Darlene Virginia Avery, age 66, formerly of Muskegon, Mich., died Sept. 12, 
2008, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
She was born March 21, 1942 in Muskegon, Mich., daughter of the late Christopher 
Columbus “C. C.” and Lois Thompson Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, 
Albert Samuel Avery; a son, Glenn Avery; and a brother, Chris Smith. Avery was a faithful 
member of Watha Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. She was a devoted and loving 
mother, grandmother and sister who will be greatly missed.
Survivors include her daughter, Joanna Britt of the home; a son, David M. Avery and wife 
Amy of Geneva, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Angela Britt, Brandy Britt, Crystal Britt, Danielle 
Britt, Michael Bailey, John Avery Gillis, Morgan Harper and Dawn Harper; a sister, Betty 
Sikkenga of Muskegon, Mich.; three brothers, Lee Smith of Spring Lake, Mich., Jim Smith 
and Charles Smith, both of Muskegon, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside

William “Bill” Rush Burgess

ATKINSON--William “Bill” Rush Burgess, 71, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2008 at New Hanover 
Regional Medical Center.
He was born July 30, 1937 in Logan, W. Va., son of the late Willard Jess and Opal Irene 
Gore Burgess. He was predeceased by a sister, Lula Belle Landrum. Burgess served his 
country honorably in the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Darles Taylor Burgess; a daughter, Pamela B. 
McKoy of Atkinson; two sisters, Mary Hand of Wilmington and Linda Richardson and 
husband David of Darlington S.C.; a brother, Clyde Burgess and wife Mary of Burgaw; 
several nieces, nephews and a beloved grand-dog named Rudy.
Burgess loved his family dearly and was a good provider for his beloved wife and daughter. 
He was blessed with a love of music and natural talent. He enjoyed playing the guitar, 
piano and keyboard. His passions included restoring antique cars and growing and grafting 
Japanese Maple trees. A gathering of family and close friends will be held at a later date.

Thomas Henry Bolling 

ROCKY POINT--Thomas Henry Bolling, age 62, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at New 
Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 4, 1946 in Brunswick County the son of the late Earl Beverly Bolling and 
Annie Willetts Bolling. Thomas loved his family dearly and showed it in many ways. Being 
an avid hunter and fisherman, he always enjoyed being outdoors in God’s beautiful world. 
He was a noted and talented sheet metal worker and took great pride in his work.
Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Gail Crocker Bolling of the home; two daughters, 
Pamela Ann Bolling of Wilmington and Angela Marie Best and husband Robert of 
Hampstead; two grandchildren, Thomas Best and Robert Earl Best; six sisters, Lynn 
Evans of Rocky Point, Emily Tromblay of Lowell, Mass., Rae Cobb of Washington state, 
Betty Jean Browning of Winnabow, Virginia Ward of Bolton, and Barbara Jackson of Texas;
 a brother, James Eichorn of Winnabow; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jerry T. Spell

CASTLE HAYNE—Jerry T. Spell, 64, formerly of Wallace, died Sept. 12, 2008 at Lower 
Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter. He was born July 30, 1944, son of Tootsie (R.W.) 
and Hilda Sholar.
He was a former member of General Electric’s Manufacturing and Engineering Group 
and founding member and former chief of Rocky Point Volunteer Fire Department. He 
is survived by his wife Becky of Castle Hayne; his mother, Hilda Sholar of Wallace; a 
daughter Melissa and husband Chris Deal; a brother, Punk Sholar and wife Pat, all of 
Ivanhoe. 
Spell was a graduate of Wallace-Rose Hill High School. He served in the National Guard 
Reserve and attended Wilmington College. He worked at the Dairio in Wallace where he 
met Becky. They were married in 1967 at Rocky Point Methodist Church. He worked at 
General Electric in Castle Hayne where he was a member of the Elfun Society and 
retired in 2003 after 35 years of dedicated service. He was a member of Wrightsboro 
United Methodist Church.
Aside from being a husband, father, and friend who brought joy and talent and a giving 
spirit to the lives of many. Spell was an avid sportsman. He inspired and encouraged 
his wife, daughter and countless others to love and care for God’s creatures and the 
natural world. His desire to be on the water, in the woods, and in the company of
 animals was unquenchable and it will live on in those whose lives he influenced. 
A memorial service followed by reception was held Sunday, Sept. 14, at Wrightsboro 
United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Haddock officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial

Stalker, Leslie Gail, 60, of Atkinson, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008, at New Hanover Regional

Leslie Gail Stalker
ATKINSON--Leslie Gail Stalker, age 60, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008 at New Hanover 
Regional Medical Center.
She was born Nov. 29, 1947 in Hayward, Calif., daughter of the late John and Muriel McCain 
Simons. She was preceded in death by two sons, Brett Stalker and Gregg Stalker and a 
brother, Steve Simons. She was a devoted wife, an excellent mother to her six children 
and a wonderful grandmother and sister. She was loved and was loved in return. She spent 
many happy hours gardening and quilting. She enjoyed working with the Pender County 
Sheriff’s Department and the N.C. Department of Corrections, Burgaw Unit.
Survivors include her husband of 39 years, George H. Stalker of the home; four children, 
George H. Stalker III of Melbourne, Fla., Geoff Stalker of Wallace, Susan Kellogg and 
husband Rob, of Toronto, Canada, and Dr. Brodie Jenkins and husband, Eric of Missouri 
City, Texas; thirteen grandchildren; a great granddaughter; two brothers, Foster Simons 
of Carolina Beach and Jason Simons of Colorado City, Colo.; and two sisters, Arlene 
Young and Cathy Erickson both of Mass.
A gathering and celebration of Stalker’s life will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at

WILLARD-- Lydia Jane Powell died Sept. 10, 2008 and is now safe and resting in the arms of 
Jesus. She was the infant daughter of Jason and Patty Powell and sister of Zoe Powell. She 
was loved and adored from the beginning of life. 

Survivors include her parents and big sister; maternal grandparents, Bob and Betty Sherrill of 
Willard; paternal grandparents, Joe and Mary Powell of Watha; maternal great-grandparents,

BURGAW-- Samuel Lee “Bud” Brothers age 62, died Sunday Sept. 14, 2008 at New 
Hanover Regional Medical Center. 
He was born Nov. 2, 1945 in New Hanover County, the son of the late Horace and Frances 
White Brothers. He preceded in death by a sister, Frances Susan Brothers.

be held at 11a.m. Wednesday (today), Sept. 17, at Harrell’s Funeral Home Chapel with 
Rev. J.C. Young-Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in the Burgaw Cemetery.

the service at the home of Dorothy Brothers at 1845 U.S. Hwy. 117 N. in Burgaw. Memorial

MCCORMICK, SC - Mrs. Ulah Margurite Flynn Atkinson, 88, devoted wife of the late C/WO 
Luther Delmus Atkinson, entered into eternal rest on Monday, September 8, 2008, at the 
Savannah Heights Living Center in McCormick, SC.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, September 11, 2008,at Platt's Funeral 
Home Crawford Avenue Chapel with the Dr. Michael Ruffin officiating. Burial will follow at 
Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Atkinson, a native of Pender County, NC, daughter of the late George Franklin Flynn 
and Alice Elizabeth Moore Flynn, had made her home in Augusta, GA for most of her adult 
life, meshed with military relocations in the early years of her marriage. She was deeply 
devoted to being a homemaker, a wonderful mother to her children, and a loving wife to her 
husband. She loved to help others, young and old, in any way she could. She was a member 
of The Hill Baptist Church, belonged to the Faith Seekers Sunday School Class, the Flossie
 Joiner WMU Circle, and had taught Sunday School and Training Union. Mrs. Atkinson was a 
Den Mother of Cub Scouts and a Brownie Scout leader for many years. She retired from 
Andress Nursing Home as an Occupational Therapist. She was also a member of The 
Eastern Star in Augusta. The family would like to thank the staff of Savannah Heights Living 
Center for the years of loving and compassionate care they showed on Mrs. Atkinson. A 
very special Thank You to the members of The Hill Baptist Church family who never forgot her !

Survivors include her daughter, Margurite (Peggy) Atkinson Gilmore and her husband Forrest 
C. Gilmore of McCormick, SC; her "Chosen" daughter, Truellen Wallace Baker and her 
husband Victor Harold Baker, Jr. of Augusta, GA; one daughter in law, Marcia Hope Goodman 
Atkinson of Lenexia, KS; four sisters, Beulah Blake of Riegelwood, NC, Melba Lennon of 
Bolton, NC, Letha Huffman and her husband Bob of Clemons, NC, and Alice Boykin of 
Camden, SC; two sisters in law, Catherine Flynn of Riegelwood, NC, and Helene Flynn of 
Delco, NC; two brothers, Miles Flynn and his wife Mary of Riegelwood, NC, and Floyd 
Flynn and his wife, Ila Mae of Reigelwood, NC; 3 grandsons, William Luther Atkinson of 
Buffalo, MI, John Spencer Atkinson of St. Petersburg, FL, and Forrest Gregory Gilmore 
and his wife Melissa of Chevy Chase, MD; two "Chosen" grandchildren, Victor Baker, III 
and his wife Jennifer of Augusta, GA, and Julia Baker Huster and her husband Steve of 
Newnan, GA; six great-grandchildren, Claire Elizabeth Gilmore, Alec Gregory Gilmore, and 
Jack Hilton Gilmore all of Lawrenceville, GA, Apple Melissa Gilmore, Henry Forrest Gilmore, 
and Holiday Melissa Gilmore all of Chevy Chase, MD. She loved and delighted in 27 nieces 
and nephews.

Mrs. Atkinson was preceded in death by three sons, Infants Franklin Jones Atkinson and
 Luther D. Atkinson, Jr., and Robert "Bob" Jerry Atkinson; one infant sister, Lela Flynn; and 
two brothers, Curtis Flynn and Charles Flynn

Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Faith Seekers Sunday School Class.

The family will receive friends the day of the service, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at Platt's Funeral 
Home Crawford Avenue Chapel.

Rev. Stiles Hout Ellyson

BUIES CREEK—Rev. Stiles Huot Ellyson, age 81, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008 at 
his residence. 
He was born in Richmond, Va. to the late Stiles H. Ellyson Sr. and Virginia Belle Gayle 
Ellyson. He was preceeded in death by his wife of 54 years, Ora Green Campbell Ellyson 
and a sister, Virgina Ellyson Leonard.
Stiles was called to the ministry and was pastor of twelve Baptist churches throughout 
Virginia and North Carolina including Burgaw Baptist Church for eight years. Following 
retirement he served as a volunteer chaplain at Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital. He is 
survived by two daughters, Brenda Ellyson Radford and husband David of Durham and 
Mary Catherine “Kacky” Ellyson Gellerman of Erwin; and a son David Ellyson and wife
 Gail of Raleigh; three grandchildren, Ashleigh Radford Dippolito and husband Brett, 
Michael Radford, Joel and Alicia Gellerman, Hannah and William Ellyson; and a great-
grandchild, Ryan Dippolito; and a sister Mary Morris Ellyson Graves of Honolulu, Hawaii.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Memorial Baptist Church in
 Buies Creek with Dr. David Whiteman officiating. Burial will follow in Buies Creek Cemetery.

Evelyn Dowless Bradshaw

BLADENBORO- Evelyn Dowless Bradshaw, age 78, died Monday Sept. 15, 2008 at her 
residence. 
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Lee Dowless, Sr. and Myrtle Hester 
Dowless; a daughter, Judy Gray Bradshaw Stanton; an infant grandson, Kenneth Wayne 
Price; five brothers, Downey, Leslie, Ross, Roy Lee and Harry Lee Dowless, Jr.; two 
sisters, Ila Dowless and Estelle Dowless. 
Survivers include her husband, Barnie Bell Bradshaw; a daughter, Winnie Sue Price and 
her husband Myers; a son, Jesse Bradshaw and his wife Tammy; a son-in-law Phillip 
Stanton; three sisters, Stella Burns, Retha Bryan and Myrtle Croom; five grandchildren; 
and five great-grandchildren. 
Final rites were held Thursday Sept. 18, at Abbottsburg Baptist Church with Reverends 
Dewey Jackson and George Langley officiating. Burial followed in Bullard Cemetery.

Loria Robinson DeVane

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.--Gloria Deloris DeVane, age 61, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008 
at Yale New Haven Hospital.
She was born May 4, 1947 in Ivanhoe, daughter of the late Herman Elree and Rosa 
Mae Robinson. She joined Royal Chapel Baptist Church at an early age and relocated 
to Bridgeport, Conn. in 1967, where she married Hezekiah DeVane and had two children. 
DeVane joined St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church and enjoyed working in various 
auxiliaries. 
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, a kind and caring friend. She worked 
for more than 20 years at Bryant Electric and pursued a college education at the 
University of Bridgeport where she majored in Education. She was preceded in death by 
her parents; a grandson, Daayon DeVane; a sister, Esther Henry; a brother, John Arthur 
Robinson; father in law, Jermiah DeVane; and a brother in law, Jerry DeVane.
Survivors include her husband Hezekiah (Hicky) DeVane; two children, Shanda DeVane 
and Andre DeVane both of Bridgeport, Conn.; a grandson, Jayvon DeVane; a great-
granddaughter, Khamya Jarman of Warsaw; two brothers, Herman (Marilyn) Robinson of 
Oklahoma City, Okla., Thomas Robinson of Bridgeport, Conn.; a sister, Annie (James) 
Cooper of Kenansville; her mother-in-law, Eunice DeVane of Harrells; three sisters-in-law, 
Bernice Thomas of Wallace, Elizabeth (Joe) Smith of Harrells, and special sister-in-law 
Lee DeVane of Bridgeport, Conn.; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Royal Chapel Baptist Church 
in Harrells. Interment will follow in the Newkirk Family Cemetery in Willard. Matthews 
Funeral Service of Wallace handled the arrangements.
 


Martha Carney Cobia 

WILLARD--Martha Carney Cobia died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008.
Cobia was born June 21, 1948 to the late Joseph and Mary Sue Carney. She was 
employed with Stevco Knits for 25 years. She worked at Dell Lab for 10 years prior to 
her illness. She was preceded in death by a sister, Clorine James and three brothers, 
R. P. King, Roscoe Murphy and Alton Ray Carney.
Survivors include her children’s father, Willie Elton Cobia of Wallace; four children, 
Dennis Cobia and wife Tina, Teleshia and husband Kevin Smith Sr., Tammy and husband 
Corey Bryant and Tammy Byrd; three special children, Emma and husband Bruce Hundley, 
Robert Carney Sr. and wife Tanja and Margaret Carney; four sisters, Josephine and husband 
Jimmy Moore, Delores and husband William Hawkins, Annie Ruth Crumpler and twin sister 
Mary Carney; a brother, William Carney; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Final rites were held Sunday, Sept. 21 at Newkirk Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with 
Rev. Ronald Henry officiating. Entombment followed in Riverview Memorial Park.

Marion Earl Shepard
		

WILMINGTON — Marion Earl Shepard, of Wilmington, died Tuesday, September 
23, 2008, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. 
A funeral service will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, September 26, at United Advent 
Christian Church by Rev. Sam Worley and Rev. Adrian Shepard. Interment will follow 
in Greenlawn Memorial Park. 
He was born May 21, 1929, in Pender County, N.C., son of the late Walter McRae 
Shepard and Ethel Blake Shepard. 
Mr. Shepard was a member of United Advent Christian Church, was retired from 
Atlantic Tobacco Company after 32 years of service, and was an avid fisherman, 
gardener and a great cook. 
Marion was preceded in death by his brothers, Percy Shepard and Harold Shepard and 
a sister, Blanche Shepard. 
Surviving is his wife, Peggy Mason Shepard of the home; daughters, Linda Copeland and
 husband, Joe of High Point, N.C., Allyson King and husband, Charles of Wilmington, 
N.C.; grandson, Adam King and granddaughter, Kristen King both of Wilmington, N.C.; 
brother, Rev. Adrian Shepard of Wilmington, N.C.; sisters, Carolyn Moore of Hampstead, 
N.C. and Ruth Ann Barfield of Leland, N.C. 
The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday, September 25, at Andrews 
Mortuary Valley Chapel.
